Lily Allen With Panthers

Recently, Q magazine was awarded with professional prize from the Maggie Awards for designing the best cover page. As Gigwise notes, it particularly relates to Q’s April (2009) cover, which shows absolutely stunning Lily Allen; eyes just get stuck on her due to some intimate electricity. She is obviously very cool, and that’s the only reason why Q designers were able to get the prize. Editor-in-Chief of Q magazine Paul Rees has noted, “Lily Allen is hardly under-exposed, so it was essential for us to come up with something that was both striking and unique.” Absolutely great girl, and those panthers only underline her character and unique qualities. By the way panthers are absolutely real, they were brought into Q photo studio in special cages. Rees also said that wild cats were not photographed right next to Allen. “Patently no one would let us put a pop star within three feet of a man-eating big cat, so in 18–foot high cage separated Lily and the Q team from them, and the magic of digital photography put them together.” So far there is no information on Lily Allen’s reaction to Maggie Awards’ prize, which was given to Q with her beautiful help.

On the first disk listeners will find sixteen tracks that were recorded in the American and European parts of the tour; the second half is called “Tom Tales” – it literally includes tales and short stories told by an artists during his performances. Actucally, very unique way to make things going in the music world, and it trully represents Waits. The whole track list of the “Glitter and Doom” album looks like this:

Plagiarism?

Legendary Guns N’Roses, which was recently accused of plagiarism had totally denied all of it like never before. As Rolling Stone magazine said, the band’s representative Irving Azoff told the public that everybody in Guns N’Roses “vigorously contests these claims and intends to respond accordingly.” Two independent record labels, British Independiente and it’s American branch Domino Recording Company have started the court procedure against Axl Rose on October 5. They insist on the fact that Guns N’Roses without any consent with them had used fragments of Ulrich Schnauss’ (German musician) “Wherever You Are” and “A Strangely Isolted Place” on their “Riad N’ the Bedouins”, which was released on the latest album “Chinese Democracy”. The following record labels have rights to Schnauss’ music and currently will ask Interscope-Geffen A&M for one million dollars of compensation. Azoff has underlined that “the band believed when the record came out and still believes that there are no unauthorized samples on the track”. Again, things of this nature happen again and again among musicians, and honestly, most of them never really turn into reality. A lot of music tracks sound similar, sometimes almost identical, but at the same time there is no act of plagiarism. This time it may not go anywhere because most likely nobody will prove Gn’R’s possible sample taking process. Most likely it just did not happen.

Oasis Is Over?

Oasis vocalist Liam Gallagher said that he is not hoping to get his band back on stage any time soon. This quite strange announcement came out from him during his recent interview with The Times. Before he told this sad information the band’s faith was still not very well known, and a lot of speculations were heard here and there. As Liam noted, the band was practically destroyed right after his brother Noel Gallagher had decided to leave Oasis; and it’s true because without their duet the band simply cannot be imagined at all. “Well, Oasis is no longer. I think we all know that. So that’s done. We’ve always had a lot of fun. I’ve always had a lot of fun. That’s why it was never hard work for me. It was a joy and it was always a bit of a bummer when the tour ended”, he said. Formally they fell apart on August 28 this year, when Noel (guitarist and the author of almost every song they’ve produced) wrote a message on the official band’s website stating that he is leaving them. Practically, the reason for it was a big fight between two brothers that they simply could not overcome, so Oasis seems to be over for now.

Music And Literature

Sonic Youth guitarist Thurston Moore is planning to open his own publishing house, said ClashMusic. Musician wants to publish books written by his close friends and those he admires the most in this world; those who have influenced his ideas. This guy is already well known for his knowledge of literature, especially among Sonic Youth fans. One of the first publishing experiences within his project is going to be a book by Raymond Pattibon who had previously co-worked with the band in the past; he  particularly designed an album cover for their “Goo” album. As ClashMusic notes, Moore’s publishing house, which is now called Ecstatic Peace Library will unite all Pettibone’s art works. For those who are not very familiar with his art may recall black and white cartoons, or at least something of that nature. It’s already planned that Ecstatic Peace Library will start working by the end of 2009, and may become closely related to the Ecstatic Peace! record label. Ecstatic Peace! was opened in 1981 by Moore and produced a lot of interesting bands among which are Be Your Own Pet, Awesome Color, Violent Soho, Black Helicopter and many others. In other words, Moore is more than just a musician, he keeps on producing and creating everywhere and all the time.

They Got Out

Madonna has won the court case against the British newspaper Mail on Sunday, which published a few photographs from her almost ten years old wedding ceremony with Guy Ritchie, said Sky News. At the same time there is no information on the amount of compensation she is about to receive. Basically, why Madonna still cares about those photos is not very well known, hence she is not with Ritchie anymore, plus this was so long ago. Madonna ‘went’ to court and started this legal action against Associated Newspapers (Mail on Sunday’s owner) right after they’ve published those eleven photographs that according to her opinion had to be kept in secret. The wedding between Madonna and Guy Ritchie took place in Scotland in December 2000; and the most important part about it was that she did not allow any journalists to the ceremony. However, one of her house designers had copied some pictures and later sold them for five thousand pounds. It was all secret until October 19, 2008 when The Daily Mail’s additional issue (Mail on Sunday) had published them all, thus angering Madonna. Money that she is going to get will be sent to the Raising Malawi foundation, which is being led by Madonna and Michael Berg.

Jack White Is Trying New Things

The White Stripes leader Jack White made an artistic debut in producing and directing a video, said The Rolling Stones. This video was filmed on his song called “I Cut Like a Buffalo”, which is a third single made by Jack’s new music project The Dead Weather. The guy is trying himself in almost everything, and once again proving the fact that if a person is talented in one thing then he is going to be talented everywhere. The Rolling Stone journalists are noting that White was most likely inspired by the infamous David Lynch; it may be proved by the dark and mysterious atmosphere and colour themes used in a video. Actually, not the worst example for the beginner! This debut turned to be The Dead Weather’s secong video; previously it was “Treat Me Like Your Mother”, also quite successful thing. It’s interesting to note that “I Cut Like a Buffalo” is the only song from the “Horehound” album which was written by White and nobody else from his band. He is surely trying his talents all the way through, and so far everything was very successful. The album “Horehound” was produced by the Third Man Records label, which was particularly created by White in 2009.

A Story About Ramones

Currently, some talented fans of the legendary Ramones are planning to make a movie about their favourite band, which was formed in 1974 in New York, said Hollywood Reporter. The base for this movie will be a book written by Mickey Leigh – Joey Ramone’s brother, called “I Slept With Joey Ramone”. A book itself should see the light in December 2009, so the movie’s plot will be known to fans way before it comes out. Ramones were always surrounded by lots of scandals and rumours, so possibly this new material will show some details, and maybe shall clear things up for everyone who likes the band. It’s known that talks about making a movie about them were already taking place for years, and the only problem was in the lack of those who could actually make it. Right now, Fox Searchlight studio had decided to actually move on with it, but still there is no solid agreement on whether they will make it happen at all. Again, even today not everyone can tell a clear story about Ramones. Of course, all the details are totally “classified” and surely nobody knows when it will be ready, so those who trully admire Ramones should get themselves together and just wait; hopefully it will come out one day.

High Tech Cameras

Sir Paul McCartney had prepared the new double album, with his recent concert performances, said New Musical Express. Also, this release will include the DVD with all kinds of interesting things. Generally speaking it will incorporate his summer 2009 concert in the Citi Field stadium in New York, and like most of his performances shall go into history. “Good Evening New York City” should come out on November 23 and as Gigwise particularly notes the US fans may see it a little bit earlier, on November 17; vinyl version will be available as well. “Good Evening New York City” includes thirty three songs by The Beatles, The Wings and Fireman. The last two bands were personally formed by Sir Paul, so all of it is already legendary and will go into history books. The high quality DVD recording should be absolutely stunning because first of all, it was made with fifteen super high tech cameras, and second, before the concert it’s organisers gave seventy five additional cameras to fans who were supposed to record everything around them. In other words, power of McCartney’s fans was particularly strong during that New York concert, and surely it should not upset those who are about to watch it in their homes.

Got Sick, But Did Not Give Up

Australian legend AC/DC was literally forced to cancel six US concerts due to it’s vocalist’s health problems. As the New Musical Express said, doctors have recommended him to stay at home for a certain period of time after they’ve found something not so good about his physical condition. Brian Johnson is about to turn sixty two on October 5, and if taking into consideration his pretty harsh lifestyle all kinds of things may show up. As the result of it, AC/DC had cancelled it’s concerts in Phoenix, Las Vegas, Lousville, Kansas City, Des Moines and Milwaukee. However, this unpleasant thing will not totally interrupt their American tour, which is going to be continued on October 16 in Washington. All of the AC/DC guys are pretty strong people and once they’re after something, especially if it’s touring process, then absolutely nothing can stop them. Current tour had started in 2008 and was organised to support their new album called “Black Ice”. This time AC/DC did not follow an easy path, hence this tour had begun in 2008 and will end in 2010, so it’s no wonder why Brian got sick. Also, Johnson had noted that after this tour will be over, he is about to quit music for good, but his fellow bandmates told him not to allow this at any cost.

Possible Return, Maybe True

British singer Robbie Williams was recently seen in one of the New York’s recording studios, and according to The Daily Mirror, he specifically went there to co-work with his former collegues from Take That. Interesting twist in this guy’s game, hence he was not really planning to re-unite with them. The newspaper had discovered that he is about to record a new song with his former bandmates, and if it actucally comes out then it will be his first collaboration moment with them since 1995.  Williams has left the band fourteen years ago and did not participate in the process of making music with them in any way. As the newspaper’s source (closely related to the band) had noted, there is a possibility that Take That’s new material is most likely going to see the light, and fans will hear it. At the same time it may be supported by the tour in which Williams is going to participate, and surely will sing together with Take That as an equal member. However, it’s not known when Take That is planning to release this new stuff, and their representative had refused to comment Robbie Williams’ return. In the beginning of 2009 his manager had particularly noted that his client is not looking at the possibility of reuniting with Take That on the every day basis.

Is She Really Quitting?

Popular British singer Lily Allen who’s recent album “It’s Not Me, It’s You” was released in February this year, had decided to finish her music career, said ClashMusic. This news is quite shocking because this girl is currently on the top, the last album was able to get to the first place on the British national charts, and suddenly she came up with this strange decision. She insists on the fact that there will be no new albums, and there will be no new contract with her record label. Not so long ago a singer wrote in her blog at the ‘It’s Not Alright’ website that she is very upset with the online piracy, and that she doesn’t feel like getting along with this kind of situation. “The days of me making money from recording music have been and gone as far as I’m concerned, so I don’t (at this point) stand to profit from legislation (against file sharing). Except future purchases of previously recorded material (which won’t be much)”, she said. Nobody knows (and she didn’t say anything) what she is about to do after quitting music; the best guess will be that she is planning to start up her acting career. After all, a lot of musicians are speaking about leaving music, but usually their words don’t really come true.

Rochdale Remembers

On Wednesday, September 23 Britain was witnessing the ceremony dedicated to the post-punk band Joy Division and the legendary BBC DJ John Peel (the real name John Robert Parker Ravenscroft). This event took place in Rochdale, Greater Manchester county where Joy Division and Peel have started their careers. The idea of installing so called Blue Plaques came from the town council of Rochdale, so it definitely means that they care about modern culture and the history of their place. Practically, post-punk sounds of Joy Division and John Peel are surely giving some serious credits to this small town. The Blue Plaque which is dedicated to Peel was installed on the building where Tractor Sound Studios was previously located; simply the guy began to finance it in 1973 and generally took care of it. Moreover, those who have decided to organise the Blue Plaque for Peel have underlined that even though he was born in Liverpool, he is still very much connected to Rochdale because for a certain period of time he had worked over there on the textile factory. Joy Division’s Blue Plaque is now located on the building where legendary Cargo Studios were based back in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Cargo Studios was like the ‘alma mater’ for them.

MM Was Diagnosed With Swine Flu

Infamous American rock musician Marilyn Manson (the real name Brian Hugh Warner) had told his fans that he got sick with A/H1N1 virus, better known as the “swine flu”. This information came out on September 24 on the Australian music news site Undercover. “So I have officially been diagnosed, by a real doctor, with the swine flu. I know everyone will suggest that f..ing a pig is how this disease was obtained. However, the doctor said my past choices in women have in no way contributed to me acquiring this mysterious sickness. Unfortunately, I am going to survive,” wrote Manson in his Facebook page. When he became sick is not known at all, but he is surely not planning to stay sick for a long time. In the nearest future Manson is planning to perform in Halifax, and some other cities in Canada. So far there was no information if he is planning to cancel these venues. It’s interesting to note that he is not the first famous musician who got ‘swine flu’ – all Kasabian bandmates were hospitalised with the characterised symptoms. Also, there were some rumours that Pete Doherty (Babyshambles) became sick with H1N1, but later this information was denied.

The Abbey Road Sign

The street sign from the infamous Abbey Road in London is now put on the eBay Internet auction, said NME. The most important part of this lot is based on The Beatles popularity, which dragged the street name into the same fame; this band’s 1969 album is called “Abbey Road”. Besides that, the band’s recording usually took place at the studio located on Abbey Road, so the street sign is surely worth of something. The one who put that piece of historical metal on eBay will become known on September 29, and before it anyone who wants to participate in the process can offer his own price per this lot. Money that will be taken from this sale will go into London’s transportation system. “This is a rare opportunity for someone to own a precious piece of Beatles memorabilia and Westminster history,” said councillor Danny Chalkley. Also, it’s interesting to note that along with the “Abbey Road”, forty two other street signs will be sold out, and probably used for the same purpose of helping London. The Abbey Road street sign was erected in 2003, but only after four years had to be removed because The Beatles’ fans just kept on writing on it. Currently, the Westminster authorities are thinking about creating the new sign, but this time it should be very strong and protected from any possible signatures.

Jon Bon Jovi Is Against It

Jon Bon Jovi had supported musicians from legendary Nirvana, which have accused Activision in illegal use of Kurt Cobain’s image, said BBC News. During the last week bassist Chris Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl have announced the fact that they don’t like how Cobain looks in Guitar Hero 5. Actucally a lot of musician are accusing this game of something bad, this time it’s a bad image of their fellow bandmate and the leader. Besides that, they were angered because in the game Kurt is performing other band’s songs among which is Bon Jovi. In his interview Jon Bon Jovi had underlined that Activision was proposing him to participate in the Guitar Hero 5, but he decided to reject it. He said that while talking to him, Activision representatives did not mention that his “image” may be performing other songs, and he obviously doesn’t like it. Also, he didn’t make any comments on what he would do if Guitar Hero 5 went against his wil, and put other music tracks on his digital self. The scandal around Guitar Hero 5 began right after Courtney Love wrote on her Twitter mini blog that she is going to sue Activision for using her dead husband’s image (most likely without her consent).

Sudden Appearance

Infamous Amy Winehouse had performed at the surprise concert in one of the London’s small clubs called Jazz After Dark. Possibly it’s one of the best things about being popular; one can show up somewhere, right next to people and perform live while sharing love and respect. This improvised show took place on September 17. British media sources have assumed that Amy’s sudden performance at Jazz After Dark was dedicated to her birthday, which took place on September 14 (she turned 26). Singer herself had decided not to make any comments on this issue, and probably was right. After all, what could she say? This concert was one of her first live appearances in 2009; the last one took place in August. At that time she had appeared on stage together with The Specials and performed a few songs. In May 2009 she had participated at the music festival in Saint Lucia, which is also her new living location. It’s interesting to note that her Saint Lucia performance had received a lot of negative feedbacks, and was generally dumped by her critics. Right now nobody knows when she is planning to release a new record, there are many rumours and controversies, but definite answers may be given only by the future itself.

Pop Is The Legend

The Stooges leader, legendary Iggy Pop will receive the Classic Rock Roll Of Honour award as the living legend, said The Daily Telegraph relating this news to the ceremony’s organisers. A solemn ceremony where a sixty two years old musician is going to attain his prize will take place in London on November 2 this year. He definitely deserves to get it, hence Pop is not just the living legend, but he also belongs to survivors. So many times he could’ve pass out from this world due to drugs, alcohol, and other difficulties that stood on his way, but could not break him, and now he receives what trully belongs to him. Iggy himself had said that he is extremely happy to get this prize, which was established by the Classic Rock magazine. During the previous years such artists as Ozzy Osbourne (2008), Jimmy Page (2007), Alice Cooper (2006) and Motorhead’s Lemmy Kilmister (2005) were awarded with it. Surely all of these guys including Iggy Pop deserve it because again, all of them are survivors along with being the living legends. Other Classic Rock magazine’s nominees will become known to the public right during the ceremony. It will include “The best new band”, “The best album”, “The best band of the year”, and “The best movie of the year”.

The Young Phrazes

The Strokes vocalist Julian Casablancas had finished his work with the solo album, said ClashMusic. This new work had received the name “Phrazes For The Young”, and will be the first solo project created by this artist. It should be released as planned on October 19, 2009. It’s already known that the track list will include eight songs personally written by Casablancas and nobody else, so this new thing belongs exclusively to him. Frontman of the American garage-rock band was working with the solo album in various studios, which located in New York, Nebraska and Los Angeles. Musician had told the press that in the nearest future his new creation will be available on his official website, and that he may support the album with some short tour in around the UK soon after it’s release. Casablancas is not the first guy from The Strokes who began to record on his own. The band’s rhythm guitarist Albert Hammond, Jr. had released two albums: “Yours To Keep” in 2006 and “Como Te Llama?” in 2008. Bassist Nikolai Fraiture had organised his own side project called Nickel Eye and during the winter of 2009 had released “The Time Of The Assassins”. In other words, this band is full of talents and they just can’t stay away from making new and cool stuff.

Long Awaited Video

American legendary band Alice in Chains had finally released a new video to their song “Check My Brain” from the upcoming album “Black Gives Way To Blue”, said Blabbermouth.net on September 14. The best part is that it’s their first video in ten years, so it was nervously awaited by fans and those who just like rock music in general. “Check My Brain” video is going to be the first in which their new vocalist William Duval was fully presented. The video itself is currently available on MtvU website on 24/7 basis. It was directed by the infamous Alex Cortes, who has gained a lot of fame through his works with U2 and The White Stripes. The last Alice in Chains video came out in 1999 with their previous vocalist Lain Staly, who has died due to the drugs overdose in 2002. Practically, the band was silent since then and many believed that they are not even planning to come back, but things began to change. “Black Gives Way To Blue”, which is going to be released on September 29 will be their first album in fourteen years. In 1995 they’ve released “Alice in Chains” album and since then just kept on re-releasing previous stuff in various compilations.

Phil Collins Will Come Back Later

Genesis vocalist and drummer Phil Collins had damaged the upper part of his spinal chord, and therefore this nasty accident may put his career under the danger of being knocked out for an uncertain period of time. As The Daily Telegraph said, at least it may put him away from the stage for a few years, hence this kind of trauma takes a very long time to recover. Besides the fact that Collins went through a successful surgery, it’s still not known if a musician is going to be able to perform on drums because his hands are not functioning right. Hopefully, current medicine and good care will restore this guy as soon as possible. Collins personally noted that he received this trauma way back in 2007 during the Genesis tour “Turn It On Again: The Tour”, which was dedicated to his return (he left the band in 1996). “Somehow during the last Genesis tour I dislocated some vertebrae in my upper neck and that affected my hands”. He cannot play drums and keyboards right now, but at the same time Phil is trying to keep up with his spirits. “Maybe in a year or so it will change, but for now it is impossible for me to play drums or piano. I am not in any ‘distressed’ state – stuff happens in life.”

Photos And Oasis

Tommorow London is going to see an exposition, which is about to include rare and previously unpublished pictures of now legendary British band Oasis, said New Musical Express. This art expo will open on September 11 in one of the London’s night clubs. Photograph lovers and Oasis fans will be able to look at some very interesting and rare photos made by Michael Spencer Jones, the band’s photographer who used to work with them almost since the beginning of their career. Surely, this guy knows a lot about them, and if he still works with them, then he is a trully good photographer and a true admirer of Oasis. Jones co-worked with the band during the release of their debut album Definitely Maybe (1994). Also, Jones had produced photos for the release of their fourth single “Cigarettes And Alcohol”; his photo had appeared on a single cover. To the viewer’s attention this expo will show Oasis photographs made my Jones during the band’s studio sessions, and tours. Moreover, many of these photos were already included in the recently released Oasis photo album. Practically, this gathering was designed particularly for those who like this band, and generally enjoys photography, so those who are in London don’t miss it.

Anti Music Video Games Opinions

Ex-The Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman had criticised music video games, said BBC News. In the recent time projects like Guitar Hero or Rock Band are possessing the great popularity among gamers. As Wyman believes they’re distracting children from playing for real on the real music instruments. Quite interesting remark from an old guy who grew up in a totally different time, and possibly cannot understand the fact that such games are actually driving kids into playing music on the real instruments. Meanwhile, the same opinion is shared by the Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason. He has noted that Guitar Hero or Rock Band are interesting games, but it annoys him that children are spending so much time playing them. Mason had also unterlined that if children were spending the same amount of enthusiasm learning how to perform on the real instruments then by now they would become good guitar players. Of course both musicians get to the point, but seriously can these games trully distract from the real music? After all many of these kids will actually start the real music careers with the help of these games, so it’s hard to tell whether they’re getting distracted. It’s not the first time when promiment musicians have decided to criticise video music games. In June, Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page and the leader of The White Stripes Jack White have shared the same point of view.

Heteropoda Davidbowie

German scientist Peter Jager had discovered a new type of spiders and decided to name it after the infamous British musician David Bowie. This cool news was spread out by The Daily Telegraph on September 7. This unique type of spiders, which is now called Heteropoda davidbowie was discovered by Jager in Malasya; special quality is in it’s deep yellow hair. So far there is no clear information if the “guy” is dangerous to human beings. The Daily Telegraph supposes that Jager named this spider after Bowie because a musician had popularised this sort of species in his songs. The whole deal is in the fact that spiders were mentioned in Bowie’s legendary album “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars”, which was released in 1972. Peter Jager said that by giving famous names to rare species, scientists are able to bring some attention to the problem of their extinction. Pretty good idea, especially if David Bowie will notice his old friends from Mars. So to speak, Bowie is not the first musician to ‘give out’ names to spiders; in 2008 American biologist Jason Bond has named another rare type of spiders Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi after Neil Young.

He Is Not Leaving

Musicians from The Rolling Stones have denied any rumours regarding their drummer Charlie Watts. The problem was based on some information that Charlie is planning to leave the band. However, recently Reuters said that the band’s official representative called all of these rumours to be “a fabricated story”. This strange rumour had appeared on September 2 with the help of the Australian website Undercover relating this news to some circles that surround the band. It was noted that a 68 years old musician just got tired from his work in the band (since 1968) and wished to leave it. Undercover was also underlining that “rollings” are planning to invite Charlie Drayton who is constantly recording together with Keith Richards. Previously, Mick Jagger and Richards kept on saying that without Watts the band cannot stay together no matter who may replace him. Possibly that without anyone of them the band may not stay together; their unchanging lineup is simply the one and only solid lineup. As Rirchards had told the press, in 2010 The Rolling Stones are planning to record a new album, which is going to be produced by Jack White (The White Stripes, The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather). It’s already known that Richards had already recorded something new with him.

Metallica Is Loved By Monkeys Too

American scientists have noted that monkeys are practically not accepting/perceiving human musical sounds. The only song which was able to create some sort of a reaction in them was Metallica’s “Of Wolf And Man”. Scientific article about this strange effect had appeared in the Current Biology magazine, and it’s short version may be seen on the Madison University’s website. Within the frames of this study scientists were learning about the behaviour of monkeys called Cottontop Tamarin (Saguinus oedipus). Scientists were making videos of fourteen different monkeys during five minutes, later they’ve played music for thirty seconds and compared their behaviour. This project had included a professional violencellist David Teie who had chosen various music tracks that may influence monkeys. Among played tracks are “Grudge” by Tool, “Fragile” by Nine Inch Nails, and “Adagio for Strings” by Michael Barber. Also, Teie had produced some music of his own, which presumably had to influence monkeys – or monkey music. Eventually, those tracks which were ‘happy’ made them behave in the calm way, ‘sad’ or ‘noisy’ music made them look more disturbed. On the other hand human music did not influence them at all except Metallica. While listening to the “Of Wolf and Man” monkeys look calm and happy, so Metallica with it’s lound music made a huge and positive effect on these creatures.

Lego Wins It All

The White Stripes video “Fell in Love With a Girl” made by Michel Gondry had taken the first spot within the best videos chart, which includes all sorts of videos created since the year 2000, said Pitchfork. Their video was set up in the unique lego style (or brickfilm); everything what was shown in the video was designed with the help of Lego toy building bricks. “Fell in Love With a Girl” was released as a single from the album “White Blood Cells” in 2002. The White Stripes is in many ways the unique band, hence it constantly trying to reinvent something what had already existed before, but makes it look new and cool. Such lego styled video could be made up way back in the 80’s, or early 90’s. However, it still looks original. Totally, Pitchfork had chosen 50 videos, which now may be seen on their official website. Here is the best ten of those: 1. The White Stripes – “Fell in Love With a Girl”, 2. R. Kelly – “Trapped in the Closet”, 3. Weezer – “Pork and Beans”, 4. The Avalanches – “Since I Left You”, 5. Feist – “12345”, 6. Pulp – “Bad Cover Version”, 7. Bat for Lashes – “What’s a Girl to Do”, 8. Justice – “D.A.N.C.E.”, 9. “Fatboy Slim” -“Weapon of Choice”, 10. OK Go – “Here It Goes Again”.

Not This Time

Original organiser of the first 1969 “Woodstock” festival Michael Lang could not find a sponsor in order to fund festival’s 40th anniversary, said Rolling Stone magazine on August 3. As promoters say, if this event did eventually happen then it would absorb up to ten million dollars. However, Woodstock  is not that popular anymore, or there is just not enough people who have money and would like to share it with music lovers. “Woodstock-2009” had to take place in New York right in the midst of August (15 and 16). Those bands and musicians which have performed at the original “Woodstock” had to be located in the area of Prospect park in Brooklyn. Interesting place to make this sort of event, hence it’s not that big, at least it’s way smaller than those grand areas in upstate New York. Previously Lang kept on saying that if he will be able to sign a contract then the entrance should be free for everybody. This sounds even bigger because just imagine how many people would pound into Brooklyn and Prospect park recreational area. Artists who have agreed to participate were The Who, Crosby, Stills and Nash, The Levon Helm Band, Jefferson Starship, Big Brother and the Holding Co., Ten Years After, Canned Heat, Mountain, Carlos Santana and many others. Brooklyn would be taken apart by pieces because it takes millions to see totally free “Woodstock”.

Back In The Game

American legends Red Hot Chili Peppers are planning to return in the following October. This information was given by the band’s drummer Chad Smith in his recent interview to Billboard. Awesome news because earlier this year it seemed that they’re not planning to come back at all or at least not in the nearest future. It looks like these guys cannot stay apart for a long time, even when they’ve had their serious drugs related crisis back in the 90’s. Band members have decided to take a break from the ‘business’, take some rest from each other after the release of “Stadium Arcadium” in 2006 and the world tour which followed it. The whole break took two years, and now they would like to reunite and possibly show something new to their fans. However, not every member of the band was doing nothing, for example guitarist John Frusciante had recorded a solo album “The Empyrean”, bassist Flea took music courses at the University of Southern California, and Chad Smith had created the band Chickenfoot with Van Halen and Joe Satriani. Only vocalist Anthony Kiedis was not dealing with music, but he was busy raising his year and a half old son. As Chad had said, the band is not possessing any specific plans yet, but their upcoming gathering should be the start up for new ideas.

Fisher's Copyright

Matthew Fisher, an organist from the British psychedelic group Procol Harum had returned himself the copyright to one of the band’s most famous songs Whiter Shade of Pale, said BBC. According to the House of Lords rule, the highest court in Britain, Fisher should own fourty percent of the original copyright. Fisher’s court struggle was going on since 2006, when he began to insist on the fact that his organ part in a song should be appreciated and valued according to his terms. The court took Fisher’s side, but later Procol’s vocalist Gary Brooker and the author Keith Reid have appealed it’s decision, so things began to hang in the air. Organist kept on saying that his part of a song is ‘the main crop’, and he surely deserves some positive feedback. Whiter Shade of Pale is the first and most successful single that was ever produced by the band; in 1967 during six weeks this song was staying on the first spot within the British major hits list. In the US it went up to the fifth spot. Procol Harum had tried to repeat this incredible success in the later years, but this kind of magic did not happen again. In 2004 Matthew Fisher had left the band and currently works as the computer programmer.

Is She Moving Back?

American pop singer Madonna had recorded a song about her ex-husband, famous movie director Guy Ritchie. As ContactMusic notes, in a new song she calls him to be “the eternal love”, not more not less. It all means that their breaking up was caused by his wishes, not Madonna’s, but currently all of this belongs to rumours only, so it’s too early to make any conclusions. It was reported that a nameless song so far, includes some lyrics about a pair in love, which separetes and later re-unites again. This curious information gave a root to a lot of speculations about the fact that Madonna is planning to start it all again with Ritchie. After all who knows, maybe there is some sentimental thing going on between them two, but most likely these talks shall not come true, even if she still feels something towards the guy. Their marriage was cancelled on November 21, 2008 after eight years of living together in a relative happiness. Some say that their difference in age turned to be the driving factor behind this separation, but no one really knows it for sure. There is another interesting fact that Madonna trully respects Ritchie as a person, and people say that there are not too many people whom she trully respects like this.

Blocked At The Stadium

Dublin commuters have organized a samll street rally against the group of technicians who support and professionally maintain the U2 world tour, said AP. Certainly without these guys the band shall not be able to perform or even move out from their studio, so those practically silly protesters are hitting at the right place. During the last weekend this legendary band gave three concerts in their hometown at the Croke Park. After the concert technicians spent the whole night by moving sound equipment, the stage, which totally weighs 390 tons and all other things that correspond it. All this complicated stage equipment will be going to Göteborg (Sweden) where the band plans it’s next performance. These operations were co-ordinated with the local authorities, but the noise was so big that dwellers simply got angry. In the morning people have blocked an exit pathway from the stadium, and finally technicians did not arrive on time at the sea port. They just had to say goodbye to their ferry, and that was the will of ‘them’ Dubliners. Later the crowd decided to let some equipment trailers out, so Sweden is going to see U2, even though with some delay. As the U2 management says, Dubliners have interrupted the tour schedule, but it’s too early to proclaim the next venue cancelled.

How May People Are Doing It?

Nearly two thirds off all Internet users have confessed that they’ve been downloading music illegally at least during last three months, said Torrent Freak relating this news to the analysts from Interpret. This news contains the real situation that is taking place within the music industry, Internet and music lovers. Interpret’s study included sixty four million people; 36% or twenty four million people are actually downloading music for free. A little less than a half of them believes that the music they’re getting on the Internet should be much cheaper than on CDs. Practically, it means that record companies and ‘restriction institutions’ don’t really have power over them, music is getting in and out despite all their tries to stop it. After all, Internet is so democratic and even slightly limitless in it’s core that in order to make it more restrictive things should get way beyond modern laws. Such laws exist in countries like North Korea were people have problems with electricity supplies and don’t have computers, but for example  in countries like US controlling the Internet will not be so easy. Temptation of getting music for free is absolutely all powerful, and people will always have a desire to get something online without going into their pockets.

Apple Makes Deals

Apple and the world’s leading record labels are currently working under the project called Coctail, which possesses the aim of selling music on iTunes, said The Financial Times. Well, this news looks quite obvious and seems to be very usual because what else those big companies can do when it comes down to selling music. Large record companies have certain designated places online where they would like to sell music, so things like Pirate Bay don’t have a chance. Coctail should start in September and will include EMI, Sony Music, Warner Music and Universal Muisc, practically all of those from a big stash. As Apple plans, after the Coctail project begins iTunes should double it’s sales almost immediately, and at the same time they’re promising that prices will not go up. They say that sales will rise due to the usage of a lot of new interactive services that will be implemented into their selling strategies. In March 2008 it became known that Apple is taking care of some business talks with the above mentioned record labels. It was also rumoured that it may turn into the most successful deal that had ever happened in the world of online music marketing techniques. In order to make things sound more simple it should be said that it’s just another way to make people buy music legally.

The Hall Of Performances

Twenty fifth anniversary of the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame is going to be marked with the grand show, which will include a numerous number of musicians who in various years were welcomed by the Hall. Organisers are planning something absolutely out of this world because according to them everything what was taking place before was not good enough. After all, this is right, this organization or better to say a club had never created something absolutely stunning on stage, something on the level of Woodstock. This year’s show shall not welcome as many people, but those who will get out on stage over there are definitely going to leave certain mark on the history of live performances. As the Billboard noted here is the scatch list of those who are about to arrive: U2, Metallica, Crosby, Stills & Nash, soul singer Aretha Franklin (recently she had decided to take a break, but made an astonishing exclusion for the Hall), Stevie Wonder, Simon & Garfunkel, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen with his band The E Street Band. One of the best rock n’ roll artists in the history of music. Also, New Musical Express had found some uncertain information that Sir Paul McCartney and The Eagles may be participating on this historical show.

Sylvian Hits It Back

Ex-vocalist of the British new wave band Japan David Sylvian had finished working with his new solo album. This talented musician is famous for the variety of experiments with music and particularly new sounds that may be classified as part of the new age. His official web site says that “Manafon” is going to come out on September 14. Another cool record that may be interesting to those who worth experimental and chill out sound. Besides regular release fans should see the double CD version, which is going to include a documentary called “Amplified Gesture” that tells about how this album was made. As DavidSylvian.net notes, “Manafon” which contains nine tracks was recorded in Vienna, London and Tokyo. A song “Small Metal Gods” is seen as the possible first single and if everything goes smooth it may reach certain number on the British music charts. Obviously David Sylvian was not the only person to produce this record, particularly here is the short list of those who were built into the process: Christian Fennesz, guitarist Keith Rowe, Japanese electronic musicians Sachiko Matsubara and Otomo Yoshihide, saxophonist Evan Parker, pianist John Tilbury and members of the Austrian band Polwechsel. In other words it seems like something big, so those who worth this kind of music don’t miss to follow it all.

Kazaa Is Back

Brilliant Digital Entertainment had resurrected the long forgotten file sharing network Kazaa, said The Sydney Morning Herald. Now this service is going to allow absolutely legal downloading, but this time for the monthly payment. For twenty dollars a month user may keep on downloading without any limits, and it looks like this particular option will be the most popular. After all, it’s nice to see Kazaa back, even if they’re not standing here for free anymore. Currently users of the new Kazaa version can exist only in the US, but soon it’s going to be available in Australia as well. Most likely their new service will be extended and in the nearest future it’s going to be available all around the world. Also, together with Kazaa users will be allowed to pay their phone bills too. Great idea and at the same time it’s probably why they start doing it only in US right now, hence such complicated thing is hard to get implemented in other countries due to local billing regulations. All Kazaa files should be available in WMA format and as BDE representatives say, they’ve already received all sorts of help from big and small record labels. Totally Kazaa music library contains one million files, so if you live in US or Australia get ready to download.

Cheese For Music

Blur bass guitarist Alex James is about to establish his own brand of cheese, which is going to be advertised with the help of Duchy Originals company. The best part about it is that this firm belongs to Prince Charles himself, said Gigwise. This new cheese will be created out of milk produced by some unique breed of cows from Ayrshire, Scotland. Absolutely stunning news from Blur, and again it proves the fact that if one is talented in one thing then he or she will be talented in anything else. Each pack of Blur’s cheese should go for three pounds, so practically anyone will be able to afford it, noted James. It’s not the first time when this guy began to deal with “cheese industry”, it all started way back in 2003 when the band had stopped touring and recording albums. By the end of 2008 James has invented a cheese called Little Wallop, which soon was awarded with the silver medal on the annual world’s best cheese contest. Besides making a product for Prince Charles’s company, James is also working on creating another one – Blue Monday. This future brand of cheese was called like that in dedication to New Order’s infamous song. Well, cheese is great, maybe not less great than music itself.

Pearl Jam Goes With "Backspacer"

Legendary American rock band Pearl Jam is beginning to accept pre-orders on their ninth brand new album “Backspacer”. Those who have moved the grunge scene along with Nirvana stayed a little bit silent for a certain period of time, and right now they’re coming back, hopefully with something epic again. Currently it’s possible to visit their official web site and purchase a CD for 13,99$ or for those who worth retro things attain a vinyl piece for 19,98$. Besides that a vinyl version contains the first single from the album “The Fixer” (additional 5,99$). A lot of musicians and particularly defenders of the ‘real music’ just love vinyl stuff. Possibly due to their activity it even created some little comeback during the last year, and certainly Pearl Jam moves along with it. CD’s and vinyls are going to be delivered to buyers on September 20, 2009, which is the official release date. “The Fixer” was already presented by Pearl Jam on the Fox Channel, but it’s still not coming out until August 24. Generally speaking “Backspacer” is the first album which is being produced by the band without any record labels, so in order to distribute it they’re using small music stores and one big American retail store Target. In the rest of the world the album will be spread by Universal Music.

Amy Calls It Quits

Popular British retro-soul singer Amy Winehouse has divorced her husband Blake Fielder-Civil, said BBC News on July 16. Following the given information, the whole process of separation took only a few minutes, so making it pretty easy case of it. Fielder-Civil had pleaded for divorce in the midst of January 2009 motivating it by a presumable cheating on Winehouse’s side. During that exact time it also became know that the owner of five “Grammy’s” is staying at Caribbean island of St. Lucia together with so far unknown actor Josh Bowman. While recently Winehouse was answering various questions regarding this issue, she kept on underlining the fact that it’s better not to think about her relationship with Fielder-Civil at all. “Blake was exactly like me. We were doing drugs together. But when I’m with Josh I don’t need any stimulating substances”, noted Winehouse. Despite the fact that during the last winter she had stopped taking drugs, she still could not beat her drinking habit. This girl is not planning to settle down in the nearest future, even though some of her worst addictions may be slowing down. Amy Winehouse and Blake Fielder-Civil have met in one of the London pubs in 2005, and soon after fell into a lot of legal troubles.

Switching Roles

Actress Emma Watson famous for her role of Hermiona Granger in “Harry Potter” is planning to act in Marilyn Manson’s show, which is now being directed by this eccentric rock musician, said Monsters and Critics. The project is going to look like the gothic version of “Cinderella”, and for sure it will look awesome if MM does his director’s job properly. After all, he is not doing what he was used to do, it’s totally new for the guy, but let’s hope things turn out good for him. As the unnamed source close to Watson had recently said, she wants to demonstrate that her image can go further than what became typical of her after “Harry Potter”, she simply want’s to be known somewhere else too. “She’s saw how Daniel Radcliffe managed to branch out into something completely different when he starred in ‘Equus’ and thinks this could do the same for her,” added a source. In one of her latest interviews, Watson had confessed that she really wishes to continue her acting career. In the upcoming time she may accept offers to participate in the projects that will arouse as much enthusiasm as “Harry Potter”.  Many other sources keep on telling that Watson also plans to go to college/university, but it’s not known where, so let’s wait to see it.

Teaching Some Lesson

On Tuesday the American blogger who in June 2008 stole all nine Guns N’Roses  songs from their new album “Chinese Democracy” was sentenced for one year on probation, said Associated Press. According to the decision made by Los Angeles Federal judge, Kevin Cogill will spend two months under the house arrest and will give up all his computers for check. Besides that, blogger had promised to produce a video for the Recording Industry Association of America were he is going to call for the online anti-piracy actions, notes Wired.com. Absolutely hard and difficult for someone who was doing something totally opposite, but in order to escape jail he will do even this thing. A twenty-eight years old Cogill had presumably understood his wrongdoing and began to co-operate with RIAA in December 2008, so they’ve dropped the orginal claim that could force him to pay three hundred seventy one thousand dollars. Prosecutor was insisting on some real jail time, but the judge has come to a conclusion that a young man had already ‘learned some lesson’. Surely, this decision is very mild and nice, seems to be extremely liberal, but fare because it’s still not forth of isolating someone for music. Even if it looks bad, jail sentence for stealing music should be replaced with some moral or ethical blame.

Sometimes It Breaks

Canadian musician Dave Carroll who had recently accused United Airlines of damaging his precious guitar, has recorded a song about this incident and placed it on YouTube, said Agence France-Presse. As Caroll says, in 2008 him and his band have departured from Halifax (Canada) to Nebraska (US), everything was allright, but during their short stay at the O’Hara airport in Chicago they’ve witnessed the way loaders were handling his instruments. When musician had received his guitar back it turned to be broken. Eventually he was trying to sue the company, but things just turned against him and he was left without money. Carroll’s guitar is worth of three thousand dollars and seems to be quite cool if he can’t forget that day. Actually, any musician would get angry, especially if that instrument means something special. No money for the damage make things lool twice as worse. The first song which is now available on YouTube is called “United Breaks Guitars”, which tells the whole story. Those who are getting under the fire are loaders and company representatives who keep on ignoring him. “I should have flown with someone else or gone by car,” sings Carroll. In his comments to this video Dave has noted that the second one is coming soon.

Plagiarism?

Producer and DJ Adam Freeland has started the legal procedure against Black Eyed Peas. Musician is sure of the fact that they’ve stolen his song “Mancry” and used it’s melody in their “Party All The Time”, which was released on the album “The E.N.D. (The Energy Never Dies)”, said ContactMusic. Freeland had placed both melodies on his Twitter micro-blog in order to give his fans a chance to compare it and give their own opinion. It’s a typical misunderstanding between bands and musicians, who stole what or why such and such melody sounds so similar. Usually these debates end up in mutual disagreement and finally cease to exist because often they do sound similar, but there is no act of plagiarism too. Proves are scarce in situations like this one. At the same time scandalous blogger Perez Hilton who had recently sued Black Eyed Peas manager Polo Molina, insists that the band could hear Freeland’s song during his personal private party, which took place in 2008, before “The E.N.D.” came out.  In other words, lawyers are already talking, but there is nothing on when they will take these talks to court. Currently, Black Eyed Peas are getting for the grand world tour in support of the album mentioned above.

The Road To Abbey

Abbey Road studio, which became legendary due to the fact that The Beatles used to rehearse and record over there, starts a new life. The whole idea behind their new project is to give young musicians a chance to co-operate with the Abbey Road’s experienced specialists. Sort of transferring an experience to those who wish to learn, or just stay in touch with the old rock n’ roll legends. Now their web site is saying that any band or musician can use studio’s online-mastering tricks. In order to get an access, one should register by filling out an application and send his demo to the Abbey Road specialists who will take a look at it. Pretty cool idea, but for some reason there is no clear information on whether it will be free or not. There is no doubt that many musicians would like to join this project, so money factor may play some role in this game. Abbey Road studio was founded in London in 1931 and in the beginning used to work exclusively with classic musicians, but later began to provide services to pop and rock n’ roll bands too. Particularly Abbey Road, which is now owned by the EMI records label had produced all twelve The Beatle’s albums. One of them was even called by it’s name - “Abbey Road”.

The Last Rarity

Paul McCartney has finished working with John Lennon’s extremely rare song “Now And Then”, and in the nearest time plans to make it public, said ContactMusic. This song was written by John Lennon in 1978, but for some reason he was not able to record it before his death in 1980, so it existed only in the demo version. In 1995 Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono had decided to give this practically unknown record, plus some others including “Free As A Bird” and “Real Love” to his former bandmates while they were working with The Beatle’s “Anthology”. Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr have finished their parts in “Free As A Bird” and “Real Love”, and later included them into “The Beatles” album, but “Now And Then” remained unfinished due to some internal factions. During the last two years McCartney had finally ended up working with this song, also incorporating what was made up by the rest of his collegues. If “Now And Then” will see the light then it should be the first song since 1996 basically created by The Beatles, and practically the last rarity that still remains unreleased. “Real Love” which was part of the “Anthology” (1996) seemed to be the end line, but let’s wait for “Now And Then”.

According To "Drum!" He Is The best

“Drum!” magazine had announced the list of those musicians who are going to get this year’s Drummie Awards. Their cool prize was founded by the magazine itself and is given out to the best drummers of the year. The lucky one who turned to be the best of the best is a Canadian drummer from Rush, Neil Peart. He just passed by everybody and according to “Drum!” has deserved to get the highest prize they can offer to him. Also, Peart had received the title “of the best progressive rock drummer”, and therefore repeated his 2008 and 2007 success, when he was awarded with “the best live performance” and “the best drummer of the year”. In other words, “Drum!” loves this guy, so they just can’t stop giving him one award after another. Well, Peart is trully one of the most influential drummers, extremely talented and surely deserves a lot of respect. In 2007 this magazine gave him five Drummie Awards, probably beating everyone else’s records. Besides that, “Drum!” granted him with one more “the coolest live performance” award and particularly his work with the album “Snakes & Arrows”, actually another Rush’s masterpiece. The whole list of the Drummie Awards 2009 nominations is going to be available in the magazine’s August issue.

Two Awards

Famous pop group Take That was recently granted with the second Silver Clef Award in their history, said BBC News. Therefore, they’ve turned to be more successful (of course, in terms of getting this award only) than Paul McCartney and The Rolling Stones, which have received Silver Clef just once. The first award was given to the band way back in 1995, only a few months before Robbie Williams has left them in order to start his absolutely smashing solo career. Why this award’s organisers like Take That so much is not very clear though, and why such monsters of music as The Rolling Stones and Sir Paul were left behind them is even more strange. However, Take That is not without a talent, and definitely they deserve certain amount of respect. After all, musicians like McCartney are surely way above them, and their fame is dwelling on the higher level, on the level of history. Take That is not that huge, so maybe that’s the reason why they deserve to have more awards of this sort. Silver Clef Award was founded by the Nordoff-Robbins charity foundation and is traditionally given out annually to all kinds of musicians including such bands as Take That. During this year’s ceremony there was an auction, which enabled Silver Clef’s organisers to collect up to 400 thousand pounds. Surely, not without Take That’s help.

Another Big Sale

Infamous Christie’s auction house, for recently able to sell John Lennon’s guitar for more than 240 thousand euros, said The Guardian on Thursday, June 2. In the beginning auction’s organizers were showing some interest in selling it for 100–150 euros, but the interest for this lot just grew out of any expected proportions. Practically, it’s not about the price, but it’s about the one who was using it, so all these huge costs seem to be slightly off track. Why just selling it all, selling it all the time while thinking only about prices, lots and other ‘down to earth’ miserable things, when musician’s art matters the most? Neil Roberts, auction’s manager who is specializing on selling of items that deal with pop/rock culture said that on the day when they’ve put on sale Lennon’s guitar, his firm was literally attacked with phone calls, emails and visitors. This guitar turned to be a spectacle among thousands of fans. As historians believe, Lennon had purchased 1958 Hofner Senator in one of the Liverpool’s music stores and used it primarily at home. Auction’s lot also included George Harrison’s letter in which he is saying that Hofner Senator was one of Lennon’s first guitars. Possibly this fact was the major force that drew fans into buying it.

Who Is The Winner?

American Federal court has ruled out that the World Wide Video company possesses no rights to John Lennon’s rare footages made in February 1970, and gave these rights to his widow Yoko Ono, said Associated Press. Ten hours video content was filmed by Ono’s first husband Anthony Cox in London at Lennon’s house during three whole days. This material includes terrific moments when Lennon is playing piano, smokes weed, and jokes about giving Richard Nixon a cup of tea with LSD. Seriously, why this stuff should belong to some strange video company, when it morally and even historically must be owned by Yoko. It’s worth of noticing that recently she is winning nearly every case that deals with Lennon’s heritage, sometimes this may look slightly unfair when McCartney or Ringo are losing these cases, but right now it seems to be absolutely fair. World Wide Video representatives have gained the copyright for 125 thousand dollars from Cox himself (originally the price went up to one million, so they’ve planned to use these money to make a documentary called “3 Days in the Life”). However, after a public demonstration of some parts of this unique footage, the WWV company was immediately contacted by Ono’s lawyers. The result was her total victory.
